You might think Kim Kardashian’s life is an open book that her fans get to experience … twice! First, they see everything that happens in real-time through social media, and then again when the next season of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” hit.
But it turns out, Kim has gotten a little more savvy and a little more cautious about her social media usage, and learned to value her privacy since having children. Or at least, some privacy.
Talking as the keynote speaker at the 23rd World Congress on Information Technology convention in Armenia on Tuesday, the reality star and KKW Beauty founder talked about how her views on social media have evolved and grown as her family has.
“I think at the beginning, I didn’t know what the word ‘privacy’ really meant,” she admitted. “I was very okay with people knowing every detail of my life.” Now, though, she says she’s found a balance so she can still share with her fans, but still maintain “some privacy.”
“I figured out a really good balance of sharing what I want to share,” she said.
But it wasn’t just her kids that brought about this evolution of Kim’s social media strategy. “There definitely is oversharing, especially when safety can be a factor when there’s so many eyes on you,” she noted. “I learned firsthand that if you share too much, it can be a little bit dangerous at times.”
Kardashian became the victim of a robbery three years ago in Paris in part because her attackers were able to track her movements through her social media updates. She reportedly still suffers from PTSD over the traumatic ordeal. Add the parental drive to protect her children, and it’s understandable that she took a step back from her social media usage and reassessed.
“I move really cautiously now that I have kids, but I still love to be open and honest and that’s who I am,” Kim said. “There is a way to have both and to share, but not feel like your whole life is being used just for social media. You do have to have balance.”
Of course, her whole live has never been used just for social media. There’s a reality TV juggernaut to fuel as well.

That train keeps on rolling as “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” drops new episodes every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on E!
